In the ancient Liangzhu region (near Shanghai now) in China, a group
of ritual vessels, called cong, and pendants were discovered. Cong is
a square ritual vessel. In the elaborate ones, there are two eyes and
one prominent beak on each corner, which suggests that they had a long
tradition of impressive birds. In many examples, the beak is prominent.
The baskets below the bird also suggests that the round baskets may have
been used for transportation during the prehistoric times. |
